Why We Use Whole Grain in Our Bakery Products
Sept 21, 2022
Whole grain is an important aspect of our bakery production here at Baker Boy, particularly when it comes to the schools that use our products. Child Nutrition laws state half of the weekly grains offered to kids for school lunches must be whole grain-rich and the remaining grain items must be enriched.
We take that seriously here at Baker Boy, which is why we offer a wide variety of whole grain-based products.
Why is Whole Grain Better for Kids?
Whole grains are rich in B vitamins, minerals and fiber, which helps kids feel full for longer so they stay alert to concentrate at school.
Studies have shown that consuming whole grains lowers the risk of illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. The benefits of whole grains include:
Fiber: Helps increase food movement through the digestive system.
B Vitamins: Essential for a healthy nervous system and helps convert and produce energy from fats, carbohydrates and glucose.
Minerals, including iron and magnesium. Iron is responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood, while magnesium builds strong bones and releases energy from muscles.
Antioxidants: Strengthen the body’s ability to fight infection and disease.
Our whole grain products are also low in sodium, free of harmful additives and preservatives, and don’t contain any high fructose corn syrup.

School Requirements for Whole Grain
According to the USDA, foods that meet the whole grain-rich criteria are those that contain at least 50% whole grains, and the remaining grains in the food are enriched or are 100% whole grain. At least one serving of grains per day must be whole grain-rich.
We proudly offer versatile bakery products for all types of K-12 schools, so you can do more with fewer SKUs. Our specialty whole grain items are ideal for meeting the USDA requirements for school lunches and breakfast!
